Nigel Shearman

Biography

During his time at with the University Officer Training Corps, Nigel learnt basic infantry skills which have set him in good stead in his life. Over the years Nigel’s work as a Telecoms Engineer saw him travelling across Europe, China, India and North America. During his spare time on these trips he could be found in the local museums learning about the local military history.

The flames of Nigel’s passion for history were fanned with the increase of online resources. This enabled a more in-depth investigation into his own family history, leading to the discovery of a Grandfather that he had never met and his amazing Army career. Whilst always having an interest in the Second World War, Nigel is constantly researching to understand what happened and why. This continued knowledge is allowing him to dispel that the myths from the 1970’s that the British troops were not very good and their equipment was poor. This always seemed to pose the question “if we weren’t that good, how did we win?”

As well as re-enacting as a Second World War infantry man, sharing his knowledge of small arms and explaining how they work, Nigel also presents a very insightful talk on the 2/5th Queen’s Regiment in 1940, called ‘Courage Under Fire’.
