Tour the Fort through the Victorian age

Take an exciting tour of Shoreham Fort and find out what role this unique fort played in defending England. Being a prototype fortification we will discuss the lessons learned and how the fort was built, manned and its diverse history including connections to the Charge of the Light Brigade, Links with a famous British Actor and even the Edison Wax cylinder recorder. This tour will also mention the forts at Littlehampton, Newhaven and Fort Nelson in Fareham near Portsmouth.

Activities include:

  • How the cannon was used
  • The role of the Powder Monkey (This can also include a game)
  • Practice Rifle Drill
  • Storm the Fort
  • Did the Victorians have Health & Safety?

Presentation

Gary Baines, founder and chairman of the Friends of Shoreham Fort, has been researching the site for 31 years.   His presentation enlightens you into the unique and diverse heritage of the scheduled monument, Shoreham Fort, which incorporates the Charge of The Light Brigade, a French spy and a famous British Actor.

From inception to our vision for the future, this talk leaves nothing to the imagination and with the use of photos, maps and drawings along with Gary’s extensive knowledge.  This helps us achieve our aim of Giving History a Future, by Bringing History to Life.

Shoreham Fort is more than an historic ruin; it’s a story waiting to be told…
